I started volunteering back in June, so I’ve been at this for four months now. I work in circulation and my main job is to help keep the books a-movin’ back to the shelves. I have spent time checking in books at the adult/young adult station as well as the juvenile station. The AV station is quite the challenge — I can never seem to get ahead, as they constantly keep falling into the drop box. I can get ahead of the books – I’m pretty quick at checking them back in, if I say so myself! I try to leave my shift on Friday nights with all the books checked back in and ready to be shelved. It is such a sense of accomplishment to have that done before I head home.

Quite often I pick up a book to beep back into the system and it looks pretty interesting. Last night I came across several where I stopped what I was doing to read the back of the jacket and peruse through the pages. Last night’s books:

I like working in circulation because I get to see all the new (and old) stuff the library has! It’s like a physical catalog – i.e., I’m physically going through books, browsing through them as I check them back in. I was able to feel some satisfaction at the end of the night as I was able to get all the adult and YA books checked in. The juvenile section had a bit of books waiting to return to their rightful place on the shelves, but I wanted to leave something for the Saturday volunteer’s shift. (I want to make sure they have something to do, ya know?)

Yep, I am adding one more blog to the 50 million that are already out there. This blog will be more for my own documentation of adventures through graduate school at Florida State University. I am trying to earn an MLIS as I hope to become a librarian some day. (As for whether I want to work in an academic library or a public library — or perhaps do some sort of special library work — remains to be figured out. Hopefully my adventures through Library School and volunteering at the Corvallis Public Library will lead me to the direction of enlightenment.
