Higher Education by day, MLIS student by night

About

Circulation is comprised of my random thoughts, musings and documentation of library and info science adventures as I work through my MLIS.

Want to contact me? She can be reached via email at ljbrown06 [at] gmail [DOT] com or ljb06 [at] fsu [DOT] edu. I am also on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Flickr.

I am currently an academic counselor at my alma mater, Oregon State University.  We are the other OSU – not “The” Ohio State University or Oklahoma State University.  (One way to tell the difference is that Oregon State is a medium-sized research university in the Pacific Northwest and is one of only two universities in the United States designated a land-, sun-, sea- and space-grant institution).

I spent my first stint at OSU as a college student where I earned my B.S. in Sociology. While my father innocently wondered aloud “what are you going to do with that degree?,” I realized the benefits my liberal arts education provided in regards to nurturing creative and critical thinking and the desire to pursue life-long learning opportunities.

Since then, I earned my M.Ed. in Student Affairs in Higher Education across the country at the University of Florida and spent the next 6 years putting the student affairs theory I learned into practice every day in my job as an academic adviser.

Five years after earning my M.Ed., I went back to school to earn my MLIS via Florida State University’s College of Information distance learning program. I love what I am learning and see connections between information sciences and student affairs. I additionally supplement my coursework by volunteering several hours a week at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. I plan to graduate with my MLIS in 2010 with specializations in Reference & Instruction and Leadership & Management.

Outside of work, I enjoy music, reading, adding to my collection of LP records and learning about web 2.0 innovations and other technologies. Fascinated by the educational opportunities that web 2.0 provides, I plan to use this blog as a platform for documenting my own educational experiences.
